Have you got the chills yet? On February 1st, Samsung will host its next Unpacked event, where the Galaxy S23 line will be shown off for the first time. The pricing for the U.S., Europe, and several other markets, as well as almost all of the hardware specifications, have been revealed.
Now, just a few days before Samsung’s scheduled unveiling of the Galaxy S23, the full set of features available in the upcoming edition of the company’s One UI—version 5.1—has leaked online.
Leaked by German website WinFuture, One UI 5.1’s changelog promises enhanced stock apps, family album sharing in the Gallery app, simpler access to the Expert RAW camera app, enhanced augmented reality (AR) emojis and an AR zone, streamlined collaboration in Samsung Notes, better multi-device controls, and minor tweaks to Samsung DeX.
The newest battery widget is probably going to be your favorite. During the keynote presentation, Samsung showed off a number of One UI 5.0 widgets. One of these widgets was a battery tracker, which hasn’t been seen on any Galaxy phone or tablet before. The widget shows how much juice the phone and any linked devices like the S Pen, smartwatch, or wireless headphones have left.
It seems that there are two different widgets available, a 4 by 1 and a 4 by 2. If you want to see how much juice you have left in your wireless earphones or smartwatch, you either have to launch the Galaxy Wearable app or utilize a dedicated widget for each device. Now, with the new battery widget, you can see the current battery status of every connected device at a glance.
We are pleased that Samsung is introducing this widget, which has been available on Apple’s iOS and iPadOS for some time, to One UI.
Additionally, we appreciate the QR code feature that allows you to transfer your Wi-Fi settings from an older Galaxy phone to a new one.
One UI 5.1 now allows the Samsung Internet app on your phone to mirror content from your PC browser.
Phones other than the Galaxy S23 series will receive the One UI 5.1 update in the near future. However, “AI Restoration” appears to be exclusive to the Galaxy S23 series. This sounds like it might work in a similar way to Google’s Photo Unblur tool in the Pixel 7 line of smartphones.
Which Android maker is best at releasing new versions of their operating system is not a secret. Samsung also claims to offer five years of security updates for many of its devices, as well as four major Android OS upgrades for its top-tier and lower-tier handsets. And when in just two months it updated fifty or more devices to Android 13 and One UI 5.0, it pretty much told its rivals that they would never catch up.
Although several Chinese companies, such as OnePlus, have recently declared that their handsets will receive four Android OS updates, they do not have anywhere like the market share of Samsung and thus release substantial new improvements much more slowly. In addition, OnePlus and co. only promise four OS upgrades to new handsets, while Samsung has always been conscientious about include both flagship and midrange devices in its benchmark-raising software updates.
And it looks like Samsung is dead set on proving that in 2023, too, by making sure that its consumers get access to the latest software updates as soon as possible.
One UI 5.1, based on Android 13, is likely to come alongside Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series. Based on history, the new software will initially target older high-end phones before moving on to tablets and cheaper mid-range models. Samsung has finally announced the devices that will be among the first to receive the One UI 5.1 update.
Recent updates to the Camera Controller software for the Galaxy Watch 5 from Samsung have included the ability to zoom in and out. According to the changelog, the feature is exclusive to devices running One UI 5.1, which includes all devices introduced after the Galaxy S20, Galaxy Z Flip, and Galaxy Fold. Only newer Galaxy S series phones, starting with the Galaxy S21, are compatible with the One UI 5.1. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and other recent models in the Galaxy Z family would be the same.
One UI 5.1 update coming soon to these phones:
- Galaxy S21
- Galaxy S21+
- Galaxy S21 Ultra
- Galaxy S21 FE
- Galaxy S22
- Galaxy S22+
- Galaxy S22 Ultra
- Galaxy Z Flip 5G
- Galaxy Z Flip 3
- Galaxy Z Flip 4
- Galaxy Z Fold 2
- Galaxy Z Fold 3
- Galaxy Z Fold 4
Is it safe to assume that the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 will not receive the One UI 5.1 update? Okay, it hasn’t been obvious yet. One UI 5.1 beta firmware for the Galaxy S20 was discovered on Samsung’s servers a few days ago. That being said, it’s likely that the South Korean company will roll out the update to such handsets eventually. Unfortunately, until Samsung makes an official announcement, we have no way of knowing.
To think that Samsung has just started working on One UI 5.1 after having done such a great job with the One UI 5.0 and Android 13 upgrade and rolling it out to so many Galaxy devices in such a short period of time is mind-boggling.
It helps that One UI 5.1 is a minor update compared to One UI 5.0/Android 13, but the fact that Samsung has been pushing the limits over the past few months and shows no signs of slowing down is remarkable.
Here is the complete One UI 5.1 changelog
