The Consumer Electronics Show, also known by its acronym CES, has traditionally provided us with the opportunity to get a sneak peek into the future of mobile technology. An improved hinge for foldable phones was one of the more intriguing innovations that surfaced this year at the event. It was displayed by none other than Samsung Display.
The infamous crease that we are used to seeing on foldable smartphones like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4, for example, is going to be less obvious thanks to this new hinge that has been developed. It is known as a “water-drop hinge,” and it is designed in such a way that it reduces the amount of stress that is placed on the display. When it is folded inward, it becomes the shape of a water drop, as its namesake suggests.
The fact that this new design also makes it possible for the screen to be curved both inwards and outwards hints at the possibility of a future foldable phone that can rotate through a full 360 degrees. However, the fact that this new design also makes it possible for the screen to be curved both inwards and outwards is arguably more exciting. In addition to this, doing so would also make it possible for Samsung to eventually eliminate the gap that can be seen between the two halves of the phone when it is closed. When the phone is closed, this improvement is starting to sound and look a lot like the Oppo Find N2 and the Oppo Find N2 Flip, both of which have already reached a design with fewer apparent creases and a more flush appearance.
Now, it is very tempting to speculate that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will come with this new hinge and all of the benefits that come along with it; however, there haven’t been any other hints pointing at such an upgrade as of yet. Despite this, it is very tempting to speculate that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will come with all of the benefits that come along with it. Having said that, there is still a considerable amount of time before August 2023, which is when we anticipate both phones will be unveiled, so anything may happen in the meantime.
At this very moment, all eyes are firmly fixed on none other than Samsung’s brand-new and soon-to-be-released Galaxy S23 series, which consists of three phones with standard slab designs. On the other hand, those are almost certainly going to be announced on February 1st, which is less than a month away, so there is something more immediate on the schedule for you to look forward to.
