Sony PlayStation 5 – New Sales Record

The proof of Sony’s success in addressing PlayStation 5 supply difficulties is in the company’s quarterly report for the final three months of 2022. Company sales of PS5 consoles were 7.1 million, up significantly from the 3.9 million sold in the previous year.

This resulted in a tremendous 53% growth in income for the Games & Network Services industry to JPY 1,246 billion, up from JPY 813 billion at the same time in 2021. Hardware, not digital content, drove most of the revenue, which is far more significant than it already was.

To date, Sony has sold 32,1 million PS5 consoles worldwide. By the end of the current fiscal quarter (March), it hopes to surpass 37 million. Monthly Active Users are up while the number of PlayStation Plus customers is down.

The PlayStation 5 version of God of War, Ragnarok, sold 11 million units. Take note of the number in the right-hand brackets; that’s the number of days after launch at which the indicated sales milestone was reached.

Sony isn’t just known for its video games; the company also has successful music and film studios. In the fourth quarter of 2022, Harry Styles, Beyoncé, and SZA dominated the music charts. Sony also has a film division, which saw a drop in earnings and revenue during the period in question.

Sony expanded manufacturing of image sensors in response to rising demand, and sales were higher compared to the same period in 2021. For the upcoming quarter, the business anticipates reduced unit sales, “somewhat offset by an improvement in the product mix,” — in other words, selling more expensive sensors than usual.

Something else was there as well; can you name it? The time has come to get on the phones! It’s not good news that the Mobile Communications division only brought in JPY 93 billion during the final three months of 2022, down from JPY 102 billion in the corresponding period of 2021.
